Water is a precious resource: reducing waste and improving quality are the main aims of the Sun Water project

The seond meeting of the SunWater Project – “SUstaiNable Water supply networks in Mediterranean touristic area”, was successfully held in Bari on 14 December 2018, at the Department of Engineering and Architecture (DICAR), Polytechnic of Bari. The project is co-funded by € 873,000.00 by Interreg V-A Greece-Italy Programme 2014-2020, to improve the efficiency and sustainability of water distribution networks in urban touristic areas in Puglia and in the Regions of Ionian Islands and Epirus in Greece.

The SunWater project started in April 2018 and has identified four water networks, two in Greece (Ionian Islands and Epirus) and two in Italy (Puglia), which will be used to develop strategies for the monitoring and optimal management of water waste and quality.

During the meeting, the representatives of the project beneficiaries had the opportunity to monitor the progress of the on-going project activities. In particular Polytechnic of Bari is collecting and analysing data on the characteristics of pipes, tanks and water sources, consumption and water uses, as well as data on current losses and water quality. The data are made available by the 2 associated partners that manage the networks.

On the Greek side, the project partnership involves the Municipal Company for the management of aqueducts and sewers of the city of Igoumenitsa and the Municipal Company for the management of aqueducts and sewers of Zakynthos, while on the Italian side, the partners are the Polytechnic of Bari, Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and the Acquedotto Pugliese S.p.A. .

Associated partners are the Hellenic Association of municipal companies for water supply and sewerage and Utilitalia, in Italy.

The overall project’s objective is to create innovative and technologically advanced models for the analysis and planning of the monitoring system of the water distribution network, that will allow to better control and monitor the water delivery service, with the reduction of wastewater and the improvement of quality check of water.
